![]() The principles of design include: harmony, variety, balance, proportion, dominance, movement, and economy.Ĭontent: This is the “why”. I often tell my students to burn these five elements into their brains. Elements included are: line, shape, texture, value, and color. Included in Form are the principles and elements of design. It is its total arrangement or organization. This is what was used to create the final form in an art work. Lets take a closer look at these three components.įorm: This is the “how”. This will be an important tool to use as we venture into the world of art and design. These three components when working together are called Organic Unity. Good design will include three components: Form, Content, and Subject. Understanding these components, elements and principles will help us determine if a work is good or bad, help us defend our own work, or even give us the reasoning why we may or may not like what we see. In order to do this effectively you have to have some understanding of the different parts that hold a work or design together. ![]() I often tell my students to separate their personal feelings that they have with the actual design from the different components, elements, and principles that make a design good or bad. What makes it good design? This question is often confused with the viewers personal feelings on whether or not they like what they see. It must be visually appealing, well balanced, and express its intentions to the viewer in some form or fashion or allow the viewer to come up with their own interpretation. For any design to be successful all the elements and principles must be present. Design itself is nowhere near accidental, in fact it is purely intentional.įor any design to be successful all the parts have to work together. From the tallest skyscraper to the tread at the bottom of your shoe–it was all designed. Every where we go we are surrounded by design. The reason it can be so easily pointed out is because design is everywhere. Design encompasses a great deal of things and therefore it can be difficult to find a pure definition for it. I myself have a difficult time finding an accurate definition for this term. Many times when asked what is design, we can be quick to point out design or what we think design is but have difficulty defining it. What is design? What makes it good? Where does it exist within the world around us? These are the question’s I ask my students at the beginning of every semester.
